Derek Andrew Barbas, 26, passed away on May 24, 2017 in Leucadia, California. The son of the late Dr. Carlos Barbas and Dr. Shana Frederickson, he was born December 16, 1990 in San Diego, California.
He graduated in 2009 from Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, California and then attended California Polytechnic State University. He was currently employed at Surfy Surfy in Leucadia, California.
Derek was a kind, talented, smart, and loving young man. He brought many moments of love and delight into the life of his family and friends, and he will be greatly missed.
He was an avid surfer with an international following. He chased big waves across the world, most recently in Bali, Costa Rica, Maui, Mexico and California. A Paddle-Out memorial service (a time honored surfer tradition) was well attended by the surf community and friends on Tuesday evening, May 30, 2017 at Power House Park, Del Mar, California.
Preceding him in death were his grandfather (Isaac Oliver) in 2005 and his father in 2014. Survivors include his mother, Shana Frederickson and husband Mark of Naples, Italy; step-mother, Annica Mårtensson of La Jolla, California; two sisters, Sabrina Barbas and Erin Frederickson of Los Angeles, California; two brothers, Sixten and Viggo Mårtensson-Barbas of La Jolla, California; grandparents, Stewart and Donajean Caffey of Lubbock, Texas and Joanna McCain and husband Ross of Blue Ridge, Georgia; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as a host of friends.
