Margaret D. Lawson was born to James Issac and Nazree Deloach in Falcon, Mississippi in the year of 1943. She was the second oldest of five children. As a youth Margaret showed a lot of interest in music. This interest was passed down from her father and mother who were both gospel singers. Her father served in the U.S. Army where he fought and died in WWII. In 1930 Nazree and her family migrated from the Delta of Mississippi to Memphis, Tennessee.
As a youth, Margaret was active in the school band and sang songs with the famous Teen Town Singers. After graduating from Mitchell High School, she was accepted into Tennessee State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. She then moved to Los Angeles, California seeking to further her career opportunities in education, music and modeling. This is where she met ex-pro football player and coach Jimmie Lawson who was, at the time, playing for the Los Angeles Rams. They wed in 1970 and had their first child, Gaboi Lawson, in 1972. In 1976 they birthed their second child Maleeke Lawson. The Lawson family moved to Santa Ana, California where Margaret started her teaching career and was a recreational director for Jerome Center. She was a staple in the community, initiating programs for seniors, mentoring youth, and even became a council board member for the City of Santa Ana. Margaret was an active member of the church and raised her sons with the foundations taught to her by her Christian parents. She relocated to San Diego, California in 1989 and became a member of the 38th St. Church of Christ where she was a civil service worker for the City of San Diego for thirteen years. In the year 2000 tragedy hit when her youngest son, Maleeke, passed away. This was a great loss to family and friends, but more importantly to a mother who shared a strong bond with her son.
Margaret Lawson was always loving, encouraging and nurturing to many of her son’s friends and was known to many as “Momma Lawson”. She continued in faith and persevered during rough times and earned a License as a Vocational Nurse. Later, she returned to work for the San Diego School District as a teacher’s aide and eventually retired at the age of 67. Her love for art and fashion became a passion and hobby, and her infectious smile and grace was felt by all. Margaret D. Lawson departed this life on Sunday April 23, 2017 after fighting complications from COPD. She was preceded in death by father and mother James and Nazree Deloach and loving son Maleeke Lawson. She leaves to cherish her memories her son Gaboi Lawson, sister Gerry Lyn, sister Edith Deloach, brother J.C. Deloach, brother J.D. Deloach, grandson Devon Lawson and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, other loving relatives and friends.
