Samuel “Papa Sam” Fuentes was born on December 22, 1931 in Ozona, Crockett County, Texas to Cleofas and Matias Fuentes. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 2, 2017 at the age of 85.
Samuel was the fifth of ten children born in his family. He was preceded in death by his parents and four older siblings, Frances, Ray, Pablo and Mary and three younger siblings, Matias, David and Steve. He is survived by his two
sisters Naomi and Esther.
When Samuel was two years old his family moved west from Texas stopping briefly in Arizona and also in the San Joaquin Valley and settling in the San Diego area from Texas. His parents worked very hard to provide for their large and growing family. His mother worked in the fish cannery and his father was a truck driver, was a sheep shearer and he was also a Christian missionary.
Samuel graduated from San Diego High School in 1950 and got married. Samuel had three sons, Manuel, Enrique and Elias and fifteen years later had a daughter, Judy.
Samuel worked at the City of San Diego in the electrical maintenance department. When he got the opportunity to become an owner operator, he decided to leave the City and started his own business, Sam Fuentes Trucking. At first he hauled fertilizer from the ranches to the farms. Samuel told his family that he really loved to drive. He said he really enjoyed being in and around the trucks. Later in his career he drove to many parts of California including Imperial Valley to haul loads of alfalfa hay to the horse ranches and dairies in San Diego County.
His biggest enjoyment came from spending time fishing with his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed camping in the Imperial Valley along the Highline Canal where he could fish and spend time with his family He enjoyed family get-togethers and spending time with all of his children, Grand-children and Great Grand-children
Samuel enjoyed good health all of his eighty five years of life. His unwavering memory and sharp mind remained all of his days. His brief and sudden illness occurred about a month before his passing.
He was strong in his Christian faith and was surrounded by his family and loved ones at home when he went to be with the Lord on Saturday September 2, 2017.
He is survived by his sons: Manuel (Luz Marie), Enrique (Joan), Elias (Sharon) and his daughter Judy. Also, his Grandchildren: Angela, Andrea, Nicolas, Samuel, Elias Matthew, Dustin, Jessica, Maureen (Josh), and Kristin. Also, his Great Grand-Children: Austin, Allison, Colton, Oliver, Farrah, Megan, Richard and Ethan. Samuel also had three Great-Great Grand-Children, Cameron, Samantha, and Braden.
He will be missed dearly by his many friends and family members.
