Marie Rubie Diggs Sharpe
November 13th, 1922 – April 30th, 2012

A Royal Lady, Marie Rubie Diggs Sharpe leaves an indelible “heart” print on the lives she has taught and touched with her beautiful smile, her soft and gentle ways, her wisdom, patience, kindness and love…it is a mighty love.

Marie was born into the Christian, loving home of John Eben Diggs and Penina Sapphire Meachem Diggs on November 13, 1922 in Morrilton, Arkansas. In a family that valued faith, charity to others and education, Marie was surrounded by love and attention from six brothers and two older sisters. Especially blessed with a special bond of friendship from her twin sister Mable, Marie was doted on by older sisters Wilma Mae and Edna Christine, who treated Marie and Mable as their own real live “baby dolls”.

Marie’s early years were spent in the farming community of Boydell, Arkansas and shaped by her family’s active participation in the AME Zion church. She grew up singing in the church and participating in church programs to help the needy. From this background, Marie carried forward a value for “whatsoever things are true, lovely and of good report” throughout her life.

When Marie completed elementary school and no further education was available in Boydell for “colored” students, she was blessed by the opportunity to attend high school at Walters-Southland Institute, an AME Zion boarding school in Lexa, Arkansas. Despite having to leave home to attend high school, Marie completed her studies while working part-time and continuing her involvement in church and school activities.

After completing high school, Marie was further blessed to continue her education at Philander Smith College, an Historically Black Methodist church school in Little Rock, Arkansas. Assisted by sister Edna Christine, who was then a high school teacher, Marie persevered to become the fourth Diggs family member, along with Edna, Mable and later, brother Charles, to graduate from Philander Smith. Marie earned her teaching credential and a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in 1947. She also later completed elementary education coursework at Southern State College in Magnolia, Arkansas and at San Diego City College in San Diego.

Marie also met her future husband and fellow teacher at Philander, R.A. Sharpe. They married in July, 1947 and resided in Little Rock and Detroit, Michigan. They relocated to Camden, Arkansas in 1952 where Marie began her teaching career.

Marie and R.A. were the proud parents of five daughters: Ayo (Joyce Renee), Wanda Lorraine, Joan Belinda, Sheila Kaye, and Cheryl Denise. Marie provided a beautiful Christian home for her children and taught fourth grade in the Camden school system. She and her family were involved in church, school and community activities and belonged to Bethel AME and St. James AME churches in Camden. Marie was an active member of the Arkansas State Teacher’s Association (currently the Arkansas Education Association), and Philander Smith Alumni. She was a founding member of Les Juenes Amis Social and Professional Women’s Club, and worked to raise scholarship funds and promote education and culture for young people. An excellent cook and seamstress, Marie prepared delicious meals and sewed beautiful special occasion dresses for her five girls.

During her 17 year teaching career, Marie touched hundreds of young lives. She spent 15 years teaching fourth grade at George Washington Carver Elementary School in Camden and one year each teaching junior high and high school students in Forrest City and Clarendon. At one time, she also taught summer school in Augusta and Helena, Arkansas. She was delighted to learn, years later, that one of her favorite summer school students from Augusta grew up to become Executive Director of the statewide Arkansas Education Association and the president of Shorter College in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Ironically, this same student, Dr. Cora McHenry, also taught school in Camden, and was the favorite high school teacher of Marie’s daughters, Ayo (Joyce Renee) and Wanda Lorraine.

In 1969, Marie separated from her husband and moved her family to San Diego. Marie supported her new community and could be seen gracing many civic and church events in San Diego. She reunited with her sister Mable and joined Golden Hill Presbyterian Church (now Christ United Presbyterian), under the leadership of Rev. Dr. George Walker Smith. Until prevented by illness, Marie was a committed member of Christ United and used her talents and lovely nature wherever she was needed. She sang in the Chancel Choir and was a member of the Humility Circle of Presbyterian Women for over 34 years. She was previously Chancel Choir Secretary/Treasurer, participated with the Deacons Board in feeding the homeless, and was a Vacation Bible School volunteer.

Marie also reunited with her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., an international service and education organization. In 1979 she was honored by the San Diego Chapter, Epsilon Xi Omega, as the Soror of the Year for outstanding and selfless service. In 1993, Marie was most proud to achieve the status of Golden Soror, in recognition of 50 years of membership, having originally been initiated into the Gamma Alpha chapter at Philander Smith College in 1943. She took pride in her fundraising acumen for the annual Alpha Kappa Alpha Debutante Ball, becoming the top fundraiser for several consecutive years. She previously served as chapter Grammateus and was a dedicated member of the Senior Citizens Committee, serving breakfast to the seniors twice monthly at the Euclid Senior Citizen Center.

In 1992 Marie was honored as a “Woman of Distinction” at a gala celebration presented by Women, Incorporated, a San Diego civic organization. She was also recognized by the San Diego Philander Smith College Alumni Chapter and presented with an “Exceptional Alumni Service” award during the school’s 1993 concert choir performance here in San Diego. Over the years, Marie received certificates of recognition for her service to the United Negro College Fund and for scholarship and service projects of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. She was also a long-time member and previous Treasurer of the San Diego-Tema (Ghana) Sister City Society.

Most significantly, Marie was treasured by her family for her kindness, gentleness, and love. At various times, she provided daycare for three of her grandchildren, Onaje, Asmar, and Sala, and companionship and care for her older sisters, Wilma Mae Hunt and Edna Christine Mahan. She was a beloved aunt to her “blended family”, Mable’s children, Patrice, Barbara, Angela and Eric, and was a great supporter of her daughters’ many endeavors in beauty pageants, modeling, and the performing arts in Los Angeles and San Diego. During the 1970’s, her daughters formed an African cultural ensemble, Kyuumba Nyumbani, and performed African dance, song and original poetry at many community events in San Diego. Most notably, she was thrilled to watch her daughter Ayo, who is a nationally known African cultural artist, perform African dance for Nelson Mandela at his Los Angeles Celebration of Freedom Tour. She was also proud to see daughters Ayo and Joan win beauty and talent titles, daughter Cheryl launch a professional singing career, and daughters Wanda, Sheila, and Joan respectively complete college, junior college and professional schools.

As a young mother, Marie enjoyed traveling with her family to visit relatives in Kansas, Oklahoma, Washington and California. In San Diego, Marie enjoyed family trips as well as travels to her annual sorority conferences. With sisters Mable and Edna, Marie ventured on a grand and memorable month-long West coast to East coast road trip, visiting classmates and relatives around the country. At other times she experienced the sights of New York City and Niagara Falls, and later enjoyed a month-long “trip of a lifetime” to Europe. On this trip, Marie willingly served as traveling companion to her son-in-law, Terry Everett’s mother so that Marguerite Everett could visit with her oldest son and family in West Germany.

When at home, Marie enjoyed attending Padres games with her sister Mable and community events with church, family and sorority friends. Her family honored her, along with Mable, with a yearly birthday celebration and no holiday gathering was complete without Marie and Mable in attendance.

Marie is now in the arms of her Heavenly Father. She is reunited with her mother and father, John Eben and Penina Sapphire Diggs; brothers Homer, Delbert, Leon, Earl and Roy Phayon; and sisters Wilma Mae Hunt and Edna Christine Mahan. Her love and memory live on with her twin sister Mable R. Diggs Henderson of San Diego and brother Charles William Diggs, Sr. of Spokane, Washington; five daughters: Ayo (Joyce Renee) Sharpe Mouzon of Bakersfield, CA, Wanda Sharpe Everett, Joan Belinda Dorsey, and Sheila Kaye Sharpe, all of San Diego, and Cheryl Denise Sharpe of Phoenix, AZ; three sons-in-law: John Mouzon, Terry Everett, and Jethro Dorsey; nine grandchildren: Fahamisha McMillon (Jake), Onaje Everett (Lara), Asmar Everett; Aole Espy, Kafi Espy Freeman (Danny) and Khary Espy (Andrea); Demond Dorsey, La Tonya Dorsey, and Sala Ligon (Demetrious); and eleven great grandchildren: Ashanti McMillon, Christopher and Cianna Everett, Damarea and Dakota Freeman, Tyson and Lennox Espy, Aaliyah Dorsey, and Jeremiah, Dejah and Jaydon Dorsey. She is dearly cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

April 2nd, 1960 – April 22nd, 2012

Eugene Goldy Eaton, a native of Chicago, Illinois was born to Minnie Holmes (MS) and Nathaniel Eaton Sr (MS) on April 2, 1960. He departed this life on April 22, 2012 in San Diego, CA.

He graduated from Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL. After high school Eugene went into the army. After completing his tour, Eugene was Honorably Discharged. Eugene received his M-16 rifle Expert, Hand Grenade Expert, Driver’s badge overseas service ribbon, and Army service Ribbon. Before his departure, Eugene, rededicated his life fully back to His Lord and Savoir and was baptized.

Eugene loved fishing and camping with his daughter and son, studying and watching Martial Arts (all time favorite was Bruce Lee). He even received his black belt while living in Highland Park, IL. Eugene loved to sing. One of his favorite songs was “House is not a Home” Luther Vandross. Reading was very important to Eugene. Lending that helping hand to just be there for anybody is what made Eugene such a wonderful handyman. Eugene always dressed to impress and quick to take a picture and show those dimples. But, most importantly, Eugene loved God and just wanted to do His work.

Eugene is preceded in death by: his father Nathaniel Eaton Sr., of Chicago, IL. Eugene leaves to cherish his most wonderful, beautiful, and loving memory: Daughter Amprise Princess Latoya Eaton (Binky), Son Eugene Nathaniel Eaton (Eu), only granddaughter, Syiyanna Ziabraya Finch who he absolutely adored. Half daughter, Somer Sawyer (MD), a loving and precious mother Minnie Simmons (MI), two brother’s, Nathaniel Eaton Jr (MI), Jerry Holmes (MI), Janell Washington who he loved and her daughter Brittany Washington. Hosts of aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many friends.

Eugene’s ultimate dream was to make it to California to see the palm trees, and he did! Eugene will truly be missed and ALWAYS LOVED!!!!!!

Jaqueline Foster
December 5th, 1962 – April 19th, 2012

Jacqueline Meeks was born in San Diego California on December 5, 1962. Her parents were Eva Jean Taylor and Raymond Meeks, and as a child she looked up to Chelsly Taylor as a father figure when her mother had re – married. She graduated from Claremont High School six months early and had her first child when she was nineteen. Growing up as a child she always attempted to succeed in everything she had done. When she mothered five children, who are La’Kindra Height, Kevin Height, Jasmine Barton, Eva Barton, and Isaiah Foster, she tried to teach them the morals to never give up on anything in life. Since she loved doing hair and was trying to teach her children that anything is possible in life, she pursued her dreams and went to Bay Vista Beauty College and soon graduated. Jacqueline was so passionate and dedicated about her clients and doing hair, they called her QUEEN JACQUELINE.

She was married two times in her life to Kevin Height Sr. and Tommy Foster, and also left behind the love of her life Rayford Beavers. She was first baptized in 1999 at Joy Baptist Church, and since that day she was sold out for Christ and was a God Fearing woman. She was kind and loving at heart, and didn’t like to see her children want for anything. Jacqueline Foster lived to be 49 years old and still managed to live life with a youthful exuberance. She was not only a loving mother but she was also a loving grandmother to four; Elijah Height, Keshawn Height, Quentaisa Height, and La’Heaven Height. When Jacqueline Foster was living she did the best she can and through all the suffering she still managed to smile to hide the pain. We lost Jacqueline Foster in the flesh, but we also gained another angel to watch over us. She no longer walks among us but her love and memory will be in our hearts forever.

She is survived by her Spouse, Rayford Beavers; Siblings: Charles Cottingham, Jalaine Taylor and Chesley Taylor; Children: La’kindra Height, Kevin Height, Jasmine Barton, Eva Barton, Isaiah Foster; Grandchildren: Elijah Height, Keshawn Height, Quentaisa Height, La’heaven Height. She also leaves behind her uncle Donald Ray Jordan, also known as Hassan.
