Eugene William Flakes was born February 3, 1926, in Houston, Texas, to Arthur and Vessie Flakes. To this union three children were born, Arthur, Eugene, and Estella.
Eugene received his formal education in Houston and was drafted into the Army at the young age of seventeen, May 18, 1944. He served in the military for two years and was honorably discharged April 26, 1946.
Eugene then moved to San Diego to reunite with his family, and subsequently went back to Houston. There he married to Doretha Maye in 1947 and then returned to San Diego. To this union four children were born, Eugene W. Flakes, Jr., Lesleigh J. Flakes, Michele R. Flakes, and Marcia D, Flakes.
Eugene was employed at the Naval Station as a laborer. During the next seventeen years he worked at Naval Station, as a general helper, machinist, and tool room attendant. He then began his next seventeen years with Naval Supply Center in 1964 as a warehouseman. Later, transferring to the fuel department as a maintenance worker in 1969. He received his thirty-five year Federal Service Award in 1980.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; brother Arthur; sister Estella Snowden; and daughter Marcia Dent.
On Friday, November 9, 2018, God called Eugene home to be with him. He is survived by one son Eugene W. Flakes, Jr. (Cathy); two daughters Lesleigh J. Flakes and Michele R. Hamilton (Ernie); five grandchildren Samantha Cooper (Chris) of San Diego, Eugene W. Flakes III, DiAndrea Latrice, Sharree Regina, Deteldra Marisha, all of Sacramento, CA, Charmaine Hamilton of Oklahoma City, OK; twenty-four great-grand children, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
