Shontay Lavonne Jones was born November 9, 1975 in San Diego, California to Terry and Terri Jones.
At a very young age, her family recognized she had keen innovative talents with an extraordinary creative mind and competitive entrepreneur drive. Immediately after Shontay graduated high school, she hit the ground running and began her career as a Civil Service Employee. She subsequently received her bachelor’s degree from Concordia University Irvine in 2002. She retired as a Project Engineer; having worked with Naval Station North Island, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) and Lockheed Martin; holding very high ranking and confidential responsibilities directly under the Naval Commanding and Executive Officers. She was dedicated and passionate in her career roles earning her reverence and honor throughout her tenure.
Shontay had a very personal relationship with God. She accepted the Lord at an early age under the tutelage of her grandfather, Pastor, Dr. John H. Barnes. She began her faith walk at Pilgrim Progressive Baptist Church. Shontay, throughout her life had active memberships with New Jerusalem Baptist Church, Linda Vista Second Baptist Church, and New Faith/New Assurance Baptist Church. She sang in the choir and served on the usher board.
Shontay had a trend setting and fearless sense of high end style, class and sass. To show her innovative talents and creative mind, she self-taught herself the art of cosmetology and fashion design. She was always thinking outside the box on how to recreate, invent and turn her ideas into reality. She was always on the go, often times you would find her on the lake fishing with her family, abroad on a business venture, shopping escapade or track side and courtside at sporting events featuring her daughters, Azalea and Deyonna. She was also an amazing cook; she even invented her own recipes and recreated recipes handed down to her from her family. Nothing could stop Shontay, Not even Lupus.
In 2011, Shontay married her beloved Dewayne McBride. From this union they had one child, Deyonna Amoni McBride. After her retirement, Shontay devoted her time and energy in to her children and family and helped her husband Dewayne start “Change The Game Youth Track and Field Club”. Shontay’s pride of life were her children, her husband, career and family. She was a devoted wife, dedicated mother, and an excellent coach.
On Wednesday, September 12, 2018, Shontay received her wings. She was preceded in death by her former husband William Young and grandmother Mrs. Vera M. Barnes. She leaves to cherish her memories her husband Dewayne McBride. Two beautiful daughters, Azalea Shavonne Roman and Deyonna Amoni McBride. Her grandfather Dr. Pastor, John H.Barnes.
