Larry Darnell Shingleton
November 02, 1954 - May 17, 2021
Larry Darnell Shingleton was born to the late Arthur Dan, Sr. and Lillie Marie Shingleton in Magnolia, Arkansas on November 2, 1954. He was the youngest boy born to this union. In 1955, at the age of one, Larry moved to Los Angeles, California with his parents and older siblings. A few years later, Larry moved to San Diego where he attended Stockton and Emerson Elementary but later moved back to Los Angeles where he spent the remaining of his formative years and graduated from Manual Arts Sr. High School in 1973 where he was active in sports.
In the summer of 1969, while in middle school, Larry met and fell in love with his first wife Gwendolyn Loretta Harmon whom he affectionately called "Gwenlyn". The two were married on February 2, 1975. To this union six beautiful children were born. "LD", "Larry D", "Lil Shank" and "Shingleton" as he was wonderfully called. Growing up, he loved to play football, softball and basketball. He was an avid fan of the Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Upon graduating from high school, Larry entered the U.S. Navy where he served from 1974 - 1978 as an electrical engineer during the Vietnam era. After being discharged, he felt the need to continue to serve his country and decided to reenlist in the U.S. Navy where he served another three years from 1980 - 1983. After being discharged for the second time, Larry went on to put his electrical skills and talent to use by pursuing a career with ADT Smart Homes Security. Larry was a man of many talents that at times seemed to amaze everyone around him. He could fix anything; he was so smooth with his electrical skills that everyone knew to contact him to get things done in their homes or even to fix a gadget. Whether it was a talent of building, wiring, dancing, playing sports, philosophizing, playing cards and dominoes everyone knew he was the MAN!
Although, Larry loved the thrill of working in the electrical field, he later changed careers and worked for the United State Postal Service in Los Angeles. In the late 1990's, Larry moved to the Bay Area where he pursued a career at Walmart. While living in the Bay Area, he met and married Cheryl Ann Lilley in September 2002. In the early 2000's, Larry and Cheryl moved from Martinez, California to San Diego where he worked two jobs as a security guard and at Walmart in the sporting section for the last 12 years. He was loved dearly and respected by his colleagues. He was a true blessing from God because he always took care of others who were in some type of need as well as those who were not. Larry became a father to many, such as his nieces, nephews, young cousins, and co-workers. One thing that he was committed to was love of FAMILY and loyalty of FRIENDSHIPS. We could always look forward to his big smile and laughter at family gatherings. He was known to always greet everyone with a smile and would leave a conversation or visit with "LOVE YOU MORE", "COOL BEANS", "I'LL CHAT WITH YOU LATER", "I'M HANGING IN THERE", "EVERYTHING IS A CONSPIRACY", "THE ULTIMATE QUESTION" and "EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT." His warmth and spirit will be forever missed.
