Marti and Red decided in 1976 to move to California, and following that old adage, ”Head West Young Man“, they left for Coronado. Derrick and Melissa soon being born in Coronado and after three years of ” Island Life” the family purchased a home and relocated to Chula Vista in 1979, which to this day is still the Family Castle. Their son Derrick was a special needs student at that time, and attended a “mainstream elementary school, (Greg Rodgers), of which Marti became P.T.A. President. She was instrumental in raising funds to have a therapeutic swimming pool built for disabled students to exercise. It was the pinnacle of her many accomplishments during her P.T.A. years.
In 1985 Marti met and formed a lifelong friendship and future business partner William “ Bill “ Stanfield. Together, they formed the construction Company Telic Corp. During the following years Marti began to struggle with Multiple Sclerosis, which resulted in Telic Corp being dissolved.
Along the way, Marti made another lifelong friend in Kathleen Bradley and her family. Kathleen being an Irish gal and a member of the “Irish Congress” brought Marti aboard, and together they spent many St. Patrick’s Day Parades celebrating the mighty St. Patrick’s Day in San Diego.
Marti also opened up her home and heart to many students from around the world to be a ”host mother”. This is where Tuesday night dinners was the beginning of learning, conversation, and friendships began. To this day Marti has many “adopted” sons and daughters from around the world. Yuki Wada McCabe and her husband Erin and their son Kai and Nina. Also, Yuki Okamoto still resides in San Diego where he has finished his school. “Mum” is still how many of her students affectionately refer to Marti.
As a mother, PTA President, Business Woman of the Year, fundraiser, advocate for students with disabilities, operating a construction company, donating time to the Irish Congress, operating a catering business, host mother, all made a busy life for a busy woman. As her husband Red always said, she was the spark plug that made many engines start and run on time and at full throttle.
